Auditions

Each fall, the youth symphony holds auditions for new musicians.

Auditions for the 2008-2009 season will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2008. Basic information about the auditions is provided below.

To register for the 2008-2009 season:

  • New musicians should complete an Audition form.
  • Returning musicians should complete a Registration packet.
  • Please download and fill out the appropriate forms from the links above (they are in PDF format). After completing all applicable forms, please send them by "snail mail" to the Symphony Manager.

Musicians auditioning for the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony should be prepared to perform the following:

  • A major scale of up to four sharps or four flats selected by the conductor
  • A prepared piece or etude no longer than three minutes in length.
  • Sight reading of one or more short musical segments selected by the conductor.

General information for applicants:

  • Strong musical skills and good attitude are the primary requirements for admission to the symphony; these factors are more important than an applicants age or how long they have played an instrument. However, all applicants must be 20 years old or younger, and must be prepared to make a sincere commitment to full rehearsal and concert participation as well as to private study and diligent practice.

  • Annual tuition for the youth symphony is $550. A discount is available for families with more than one musician in the symphony. No musician will be excluded due to financial need. A limited number of scholarships and financial aid are available. Please contact the symphony manager for more information.

    The first rehearsal of the 2008-2009 season will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2008. Most youth symphony rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings from 6:15 PM to 8:30 PM at the Georgiana Bruce Kirby School in Harvey West Industrial Park. Prospective musicians and the general public are welcome at all rehearsals.
