About SCCYS

Since 1966, the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony has provided children and young adults in Santa Cruz Count with a unique opportunity to learn and perform exciting and challenging classical music.

Our mission is to foster a life-long appreciation for classical orchestral music in the youth of Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas, with an emphasis on the beauty and value of of the experience playing and performing this music.

The Santa Cruz Youth Symphony serves young musicians of Santa Cruz County and the surrounding communities, providing the area's only training orchestra of preprofessional caliber. Under the direction of John Larry Granger, the symphony performs a variety of music from the classical symphonic repertoire in original scores. The symphony consistently achieves high standards of musical excellence while providing an educational and entertaining experience for performers and audiences alike.

Our goals are:

  • To stimulate the musical growth of the individual student by giving him or her the opportunity to participate in a professionally conducted symphony orchestra.

  • To expose as many young people as possible to the positive influence of creating great music within a musical society of their peers.

  • To offer to these students the expertise and deep satisfaction that come from the melding of discipline, hard work, personal creativity, and cooperative effort.
